Why we recommend 4 days over 3: On a 3-day Marrakech–Merzouga route, you have 560 km each way with very long driving days (7–9 hours). One extra day lets you slow down at Dades and Todra — two of the best landscapes on the route — rather than passing through them on the way to somewhere else. This is our most recommended starting point for most travelers. Guide to choosing the right number of days →

About This Journey

One day changes everything

The 3-day Marrakech–Merzouga route is the most commonly searched itinerary in Morocco. It is possible, but it involves long driving days that leave less time for the places themselves. Four days adds one overnight in the gorges — and that single extra night gives Dades and Todra their proper weight in the journey.

The Dades Gorge is narrow, red-walled, and very beautiful. The Todra Canyon has 300-metre limestone walls rising from a narrow river path. If you drive through both on the same day, heading straight for Merzouga, you experience them as transitions. If you sleep in one of them, they become destinations.

This is why this route is our most recommended. It is not the longest or the most expensive — it is the one where the balance between road time and experience time works best.

Who this journey works best for

  • Travelers with 4 days who want to reach the Sahara from Marrakech
  • Couples and families who want a real route without punishing driving
  • First-time Sahara visitors — this is the complete introduction
  • Photographers who want time in the gorges and at the dunes
  • Travelers who considered the 3-day route and are weighing the extra day

If you want two nights in the desert rather than one, the 5-Day Slow Sahara is the next step. If time is the real constraint, the 3-day version exists and we describe it honestly.

Day by Day

4-Day Route — Marrakech to Merzouga & Return

Driving times are honest estimates based on road conditions, not GPS estimates. Allow extra time in high season and in summer when road traffic increases.

Day 1

Marrakech → Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Dades Gorge

Driving time: approximately 5–6 hours total including stops.

Morning departure from Marrakech. The road south crosses the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass — the highest paved road in Morocco at 2,260m. Stop at Ait Ben Haddou (UNESCO ksar) — plan 90 minutes minimum to walk up through the village properly. The site is genuinely extraordinary; rushing it is a mistake. Continue through Ouarzazate briefly, then east along the kasbahs road to the Dades Valley for the night.

Day 2

Dades Gorge → Todra Canyon → Merzouga / Erg Chebbi

Driving time: approximately 5–6 hours total.

Morning in the Dades Gorge — the winding red canyon deserves a proper walk, not just a car stop. Drive east through the Skoura palm grove and toward Tinghir. Todra Gorge is reached by midday — the canyon walls rise to 300m on both sides of a narrow path. Proper time here: an hour minimum, longer if you enjoy walking. Continue south past Tinejdad and Erfoud. Arrive Merzouga in late afternoon. Sunset camel ride into the dunes of Erg Chebbi. Overnight at camp or guesthouse at the dune edge.

Day 3

Erg Chebbi → Rissani → Todra or Dades

Desert morning, then afternoon drive. Approximately 4–5 hours driving.

Sunrise in the dunes — the dune light at 6am is unlike any other time. The shadows are deep and the colors shift from grey-blue to gold quickly. Explore Merzouga in the morning: the village of Khamlia (Gnawa music community, 4km south), the palmery, the lake (seasonal). Visit Rissani — the ancient capital of the Tafilalet, market town and pilgrimage site. This is Taoufiq's home area; we know it well. Overnight in the Dades or Todra area.

Day 4

Return through the Atlas to Marrakech

Driving time: approximately 5–6 hours with stops.

Return to Marrakech via the High Atlas. We can vary the return route — back over Tizi n'Tichka, or through a different pass depending on conditions. Another stop at Ait Ben Haddou if you want more time there, or a different kasbah town on the return. Arrive Marrakech by evening — timing confirmed the morning of departure based on your plans.

Questions

Honest answers

Yes, meaningfully. The difference is not about covering more ground — the route is the same. The difference is that on a 3-day version, the driving days are 7–9 hours each, which leaves limited time at each stop. On 4 days, the daily driving drops to roughly 4–5 hours, which means you arrive at the Dades Gorge in the afternoon rather than at dark, and you have proper morning time at Todra rather than a quick roadside stop. If your schedule genuinely only allows 3 days, we will design that for you honestly — but we will tell you what you're trading off.

Yes. The return route can vary from the outbound. The most common alternative is coming back via a different Atlas pass, or with an additional stop at Ouarzazate's Atlas Studios if that interests you. We finalise the return route the morning of departure based on your preferences and road conditions.

The camel ride is a 60–90 minute route from the edge of Merzouga into the dunes and back, timed for sunset. The experience is gentle — the dunes are large and quiet, the light at that hour is extraordinary. We won't exaggerate: it is a tourist activity, not a desert expedition. But it is one of the nicest ways to reach the first camp overnight and see the dunes without walking. Completely optional — some guests prefer to walk.

Yes — this would turn the journey into a 5-day version. If you want two nights in the dunes (one of which allows a proper full desert day with no driving), ask us about the 5-Day Slow Sahara route. Adding an extra dune night is the single best upgrade for travelers who have the time.

We coordinate departure times during the planning conversation and confirm the night before. Generally: Day 1 departs around 8–9am from Marrakech. Desert mornings are best before the heat — on Day 3 in Merzouga we typically wake before sunrise (around 5–6am depending on season) and can depart later that morning once you've had time in the dunes. Nothing is fixed in a rigid schedule — we build the plan around what makes most sense for your group.
